MUSIC....CONCERT .... CALENDAR LISTING
MONK AND COYOTE OLDMAN TO PERFORM LIVE CONCERT AT THE NEXT GATHERING
(Philadelphia 09-28-99) Atmospheric instrumental group Monk and the Native
flute duo of Coyote Oldman will perform at The Gathering in Philadelphia at
8pm on Saturday, October 23rd, 1999.
Monk was formed a few years ago when guitarist Ric Hordinski left the
Cincinnati based rock group Over The Rhine. Owing as much to the ambient
soundscapes of artists like Brian Eno as to "pop"influences, Monk's music is
built on the sound of the heavily-processed guitar. Monk's concept is built
on the introspection of and interaction amongst the musicians and ultimately
their audience.
Hordinski has taken a look at the path of the guitar god and has forsaken it,
preferring his own vision. In the three recorded works by Monk, he subtlety
trumps soloing, by valuing reflection more than riffage. Though he has the
power to demand attention, Hordinski prefers to tickle the ears while stirring
the souls of his listeners. Freedom is really at the core of Monk, and Ric
explores that freedom, turning Monk live performances into memorable, unique
events.
Using Native American flutes, ocarinas, Incan panpipes and original hybrid
designs, Barry Stramp and Michael Graham Allen have collaborated as
Coyote Oldman since 1985. The hallmark of Coyote Oldman's sound has been
the interactive combination of lyrical primitive flute improvisations and
real-time manipulation of their sound via echo, reverb and pitch shifting.
Native American iconography has been present throughout their ten album
releases, yet the duo operates from a core sound in which many cultures are
embodied. Utilizing a plethora of flutes and technologies, the music of
Coyote Oldman ranges from the authentically traditional to the far-out and
otherworldly.
The Gathering with Monk and Coyote Oldman will take place at 8pm on
Saturday, October 23rd, 1999 at St. Mary's Church, 3916 Locust Walk
on the campus of The University of Pennsylvania in West Philadelphia, PA.
Admission at the door is $20. For Information call (610) 734-1009.
