Steve Roach again ennobles the aural realm with his The Reverent Sky (74:16) - another endeavor by finite man to capture a likeness of infinite energy. Inhabiting four electronic realizations of exacting subtlety he settles into each zone with a bewitching underplay of tone, texture and atmosphere. As it builds so gradually, this music may seem to have a mind of its own. Atop a plush bed of synth strings long lines of melody recede to reveal the whole hard glitter of the human spirit. A premonitory rumbling relocates us beneath a tranquil movement of sound - where stardust drifts in on every new chord. The Reverent Sky builds momentum in transits of subtle rhythmic invention, only to wind out in a gentle gathering of ambient keepsakes and memories. A gesture of benediction concludes this vivid passageway to thought. With its harmonic designs mirroring the changing mood of the mind, Roach's work plays on a scale that aligns with the intimacy of the spirit within. Reaching towards the heavens The Reverent Sky conveys a timeless yearning - in a beautiful sonic fog that somehow lifts just long enough to show us things exactly as they are.
