Dutch synthesist Mark Scheper has (under various names) been exploring the potential of the electrical arts since 1989. Currently recording and releasing albums independently as D*Time his Shadows of Time (56:14) has landed him with the great and growing Cyclical Dreams label. Presenting eight tracks of twisting, vertiginous sequencer workouts the pulsing, patterning arrangements extend across an expanse of synthesized sound. Produced live in the studio, each realization rises incrementally along steadily advancing and expanding step time synth notes. The cycling lines bound through space in charged sparks - brilliantly blending, melding and echoing out in machine syncopation. Hovering above this exited clockwork shimmering harmonies rise and fall, and when the mood changes from light to dark an unexpected beauty emerges. Such dreamy detours delight the mind with imaginative fluctuations in the density of the designs, while a subdued reverie seems to markedly slow the world around us. Vibrating with cosmic drama Shadows of Time will have listeners wandering in wonder through D*Time's entrancing sonic realm. Getting lost in this magical past, present and future can only shape one for the better.
