With a focus on the art of the possible Loula Yorke feels all that she can feel while chasing artistic transcendence. Her Speak, Thou Vast and Venerable Head (44:30) suggests a restless creative mind - one happy to have found modular synthesis as a way forward. Asserting a remarkable inner world Yorke shares six sonic studies in scale. Although accentuated by contrast and variation this collection at times may seem like we are experiencing an elemental encounter with sound and space. Starting with tense reflections of tightly coiled, combustible modulations, and on to the depth and drama of free floating electronic experimentation, this album softens as it ascends - transforming into a rare realm of tone, timbre and texture. At these heights a thinkers consonance prevails. Still and solemn, Yorke's accomplished synth devotions become apparent in unsettled gestures vibrating with energy and meaning. As the occasional soft echoing patterns of notes puts the audience in sync with Yorke and fellow listeners, we will find sustaining chords rising out of the dense tone drone zones, presenting as both tender and massive. Quite thought provoking, yet eluding interpretation, what matters most throughout Speak, Thou Vast and Venerable Head is all the dreaming, creating and imagining.
