For Óskar Por Arngrímsson the pursuit of excellence is its own reward. Releasing music under the alias Ótal his productions are attractive to the more imaginative and forward thinking among us - and reveals itself continually over the course of the five tracks found on Gjóta (42:30). This transcendent, aurally captivating album ascends to the limits of what is sonically imaginable, but then resolves into a great sounding cerebral creation of ideas. Ascending to a high wattage surrender, Gjóta soon drifts down with a secret breathless intensity. Absent conventional waymarkers to help listeners orient themselves, inside the music we find sound swirling, rising and dissolving into an amorphous yet promising expanse. As tones gradually mix, merge and mingle the atmosphere transforms into something more animated - provoking questions, and asking us to reach for meaning. It seems that every day we are learning of new realities too complex to fully encompass in our minds. Signifying a soaring nobility that grants the intense emotional impact found in works of vastness, Gjóta steps out of the relentless din of the world - to help the spark of life shine brighter.
