Nebbia
Although Kosmische Musik emerged well over 50 years ago, it continues to stir the imaginations of musicians and listeners alike. Rising above mere nostalgia, feeling the weight of five decades should lead one to wonder, "what part of our future selves are in us now?" Making companionable music for such interstellar thoughts is Nebbia (35:03) by Dream Sequence. Brimming with enigmatic, creative storytelling its two LP side-length tracks conjure a sanctified solitude at the outer limits of sonic reasoning. Much of this works' power comes from a refusal to distinguish between the lowly and the sublime. Plus, there is poetry in all the cosmic dust and debris of the Mellotron palette - which seems ghostly and effortless in its ability to collapse the distance between past and present. Shifting from wildly spinning engine to an even and refined celestial propulsion, spiraling tone patterns cycle in machined sequencer precision. As disparate strands become a cohesive whole our sub-orbital flight transforms into deep-space mission. Within this more harnessed star drive the astronomical tone poem is recast as a slow burning, other-worldly reflection. Encountering something vast, something that transcends our definition of existence changes the brain. Once the areas of self-immersion have dampened we may step outside of our individual wants, needs and disquiet - to see ourselves as part of a larger whole, and know a greater sense of wonder and possibility.
