If an excess of clarity and light banishes the shadows, then the double CD Planetary Scale Synth Hypnosis may be the brightest dark work of all time. A compilation of 16 stray pieces by Pulse Emitter, the ever prolific Daryl Groetsch, this release cannot be judged on any one point alone. His classic primitivism is a combination of Minimalistic understated sonic statements and the hopes and yearning of Spacemusic. Full of detuned and drifting oscillators, wide open filters and vague electronic gestures a great depth is established through the simplest of means - all the while reminding us of this medium's weaknesses. Planetary Scale Synth Hypnosis progresses in a series of successive curves. There are still and solemn synthesizer prayers of sustaining chords and rolling drones as well as the more kinetic rhythmic repetition of sequencer lines, harmonic planes and modulated masses - all punctuated by contrast and variation. This collection possesses a solid simplicity, and sometimes we may feel as if we are not listening to music but rather experiencing an elemental encounter with sound and space - as Pulse Emitter creates rippling shifts in the air and continues to disrupt presumptions.
