Rim of the Sun
Heath Yonaites produces Ambient Music at a level of sophistication rarely seen. His CD Rim of the Sun (64'10") is profoundly affecting. The album haunts you with its death drones and dark dirges, and as the soundscape builds, refracts and climbs, you are pulled into an unknowable vastness. The sound is easy to identify, but difficult to define. Yonaites' work is about more than just exercising obtuse musical concepts. He shapes sound and conjures up mood into a fascinating atmosphere. On this voyage for synth and sampler metallic harmonies grind through a digital metamorphosis then give way to faint voices and dense textures. Amazing shifts in tone are underpinned by stretches of open negative space. Shrouded in thick layers of sonic gloom, it is difficult to grasp the scale of this work. Rim of the Sun deals with the mysterious nature of the cosmos yet (while bordering on the arcane) keeps the audience intrigued - taking them on a tour of an amazing and perplexing non-linear, atonal musical world.
