Profile: The Tangent Project
Both Jeff Coulter and Harrison McKay have been kicking around the Philadelphia Spacemusic scene for 25 years or so. Coulter, along with Chris Schwartz, played in the cosmic music duo Tangent, while elsewhere McKay composed ethereal music for dance in addition to his solo Ambient works.
More recently these two have been working together, experimenting with sounds and textures reminiscent of the classics Zeit and Phaedra - yet their approach incorporates their own unique sensibilities and outlook. Coulter's sequencer runs, synth pads and melodies all move at different speeds while McKay's processed guitar alternates between emitting atmospheric textures and liquid lead solos. Their realizations are in constant motion, either moving forward or churning in stillness, or at some indistinct level in between. Coulter and McKay explore areas of both dark and light. Their music a culmination of a lifetime worth of experience.

Harrison McKay of The Tangent Project Leads Digital Sampler Workshop for The Gatherings
On Sunday 13 September 2009 at 7:00pm The Gatherings Concert Series presented a workshop on Digital Sampling at St. Mary's Hamilton Village. This workshop focused on the capabilities of sampling technology and is open to anyone interested in learning more about the basic concepts of the hardware software used. The Sampler Workshop at The Gatherings was headed by veteran synthesist Harrison McKay, a leading talent in the field of music technology and in music performance with the Spacemusic duo The Tangent Project. Demonstrating on an array of gear McKay discussed the history, technology, equipment and basic concepts involved in using a sampler and the realization of music. Attendees had an opportunity to observe close-up the workings of a sampler, hear how samples are created, modified and turned into music and learn how these means might be used in their own creative endeavors.
